Chronological Snobbery

I came across the term “chronological snobbery” the other day. According to Wikipedia, it’s:

…an argument that the thinking, art, or science of an earlier time is inherently inferior to that of the present, simply by virtue of its temporal priority…

A manifestation of chronological snobbery is the usage in general of the word “medieval” to mean “backwards.”

What a great phrase! Every now and then I come across an argument that amounts to, “it’s old, so it’s wrong,” and I’m pleased that I’ll now have such a pithy rebuttal.
